And more

The following is a list of Texas gardening and other sites I find very useful:

Texas Alternatives to Pesticides (TAP) is an organization dedicated to finding alternatives to using pesticides in the garden, landscape, on the farm and in your home. Their e-mail newsletter is very informative.

Texas Imported Fire Ant Research and Management: The cute cartoons accompanying the deadly serious how-to info help take the sting out of a consumer's frustration after stepping in a mound of fire ants. Texas A&M researchers tell how to give pesky ants the boot and regain control of yards, vegetable gardens and other outdoor areas. Links to other sites should satisfy anyone wondering, "Is anyone working on this problem?"

TAMU-Dallas Research & Extension Center: Yes, there really is more from those clever folks at Texas A&M.; The Dallas crew has posted insect fact sheets (see the giant drawing of a brown recluse spider next to a quarter), staff research on lawn grasses and other topics, weather station data with hourly readings for each day, and more. Check out Weeds of the Northern Blackland Prairie and its "select a weed" search feature and photographs.

SFA Mast Arboretum: One of the best features of the arboretum Web site for Stephen F. Austin State University is its directory of public gardens in Texas.

TX Parks & WildlifeTexas Parks & Wildlife: TPW Mission: To manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. This site embodies the natural state of Texas with lots of information for outdoors people, students and gardeners alike.

Native Plant Society of Texas: Find a nearby chapter of this statewide organization, see a list of suggested books about native plants, roam through the huge Texas Plant List, follow links to botanical and environmental organizations and park information from across the state and nation, or connect with the oak wilt information page maintained by the Dallas branch of Texas A&M.

Wildseed Farms: Billing itself as the "largest working wildflower seed farm in the United States," this company near Fredericksburg offers nearly 70 species of wildflower seeds and seed mixes. But there's plenty here even for those who don't plan to buy: the wildflower species and photos list (click on a photo for more info and a larger picture), the online order form for a free catalog, answers to frequently asked questions about growing wildflowers, and stunning photos of fields carpeted in vibrant blooms.
