How to Attract Birds to Your Yard

Bird-watching can be fun and relaxing. Watching the different colored and patterned birds fly, chirp and nest can remind us of life’s simple pleasures and the beauty of the world around us. So for many bird nerds or even those who just like to casually observe, bringing the birds into your backyard is a must.

How can we cultivate a home for our avian friends? It all starts with providing the essentials: shelter, food and water. Creating a bird nesting box and investing in a bird feeder and bird bath can give birds incentive to visit your backyard. Plus, they make cute yard decorations that will make your area more pleasing to the eye.

You may also want to think about birdscaping. Birdscaping is the art of tailoring your yard to be a sustainable home for birds.

You can do this by planting berry bushes that birds can snack on, putting out bird feeders and incorporating bright colors into your yard. Did you know that birds can see color better than humans can? So, providing bright colored plants and shrubs will attract birds who are flying by, encouraging them to touch down in your yard.

You can also take steps to keep birds safe when they do decide to nest in your yard. Household pets and dogs can be a threat to birds, so putting a collar with a bell or metal tags that make noise when they clink together on your pet can help warn birds to move out of the way. You can also make sure squirrels or other predators don’t steal bird eggs or food by removing perch stands from the birdhouse and feeders.
